Gilmer All-Stars headed to State

The Gilmer All-Stars 7-8 year old baseball team dominated the district tournament with a 5-0 record on their way to a championship in Daingerfield this past week.

The team, made up of 12 players from the Upshur County Youth Baseball League will play in the State Dixie Youth Baseball Tournament starting July 5 in Pilot Point.

Gilmer started the district tournament with an impressive 12-0 victory over Hughes Springs, then followed with a 15-10 win over Mt. Pleasant and a 10-0 win over New Diana. Gilmer downed Mt. Pleasant 17-7 in the semifinals, before winning the championship with a 7-4 defeat of Diana.

"The kids have really worked hard to get to where they are," said Gilmer head coach Matt Camp. "They are very unselfish and play together as a team. They are an absolute joy to coach and we are looking forward to a great state tournament."

Camp stated that the trip to the state tournament is expected to cost about $1,000 per player and donations are being accepted at Gilmer National Bank and The Med Shop Pharmacy to help the team.
