Daughters of the American Revolution recognize Good Citizens

At their February meeting members of the Capt. Thomas Black Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution recognized area high school students in two different categories.

The DAR Good Citizen contest is a national competition in which students compete in their senior year of High School. All area schools are invited to participate in the contest, which consists of writing a topic-specific essay. This year’s essay topic was, “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It”. Chosen by a panel of judges, the winner was Stephanie Roberts, Big Sandy.

Stephanie will represent Capt. Thomas Black Chapter at the state level. She was awarded a pin, certificate, and $250 scholarship for her award-winning essay, which she read aloud to those assembled for the meeting. Stephanie plans on attending the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville in the fall.

Also receiving a pin and certificate was finalist Diana Hobbs from Gilmer High School.

Other DAR Good Citizen finalists who were unable to attend were: Sami Jo Chapman from Harmony High School, Jordan Griffith from Union Hill High School and Ashton Thrasher from Ore City High School.

The ROTC Award was given to Erick Martin of Gilmer. Erick received a medal and a $20 scholarship. He plans on attending the University of Texas at Austin in the fall. Guests in attendance were: Rick Albritton, Gilmer ISD; Mike Martin; Steve Wyn; Stacy Dees; Susan Gilbert; Dr. Cherie Nazzal Hobbs and Harry Aldredge.

Tamara Moler, Regent presided over the meeting. Awards Chairman and Good Citizen Chairman Jane Mimier coordinated the awards. ROTC Award Chairman Donna Kouba presented the ROTC Medal. Hostess Mavis Simmons served refreshments. Other DAR members attending were Ernesteen Calloway, Tirzah Petty, Lometa Robertson, Doris Thomas, Pat Rogers and prospective member Sarah Monk.
