Gilmer High School Scholastic Banquet honors top students

Gilmer High School and representatives of community organizations gathered Monday night to recognize the honor graduates for 2008 and the academic leaders of the junior class.

Kathleen Galeano, the class valedictorian, led the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance, while Dianna Hobbs, the salutatorian, led the invocation.

Medallions were presented to the 16 honor graduates of the Class of 2008. They are Kathleen Galeano, Diana Hobbs, Megan Bullock, Ali Fritsche, Jenny Smith, Katherine Loftice, Erick Martin, Rachel Lewis, Hanna Brevard, Colby Henderson, Mary Adair, Shelbi Daniel, Kyle Bowden, Kiara Jordan, Lacey Hux and Jarah Crittenden.

Continuing a tradition which began in the early 1960s, top junior students received a blanket with a letter G in honor of their high academic status. Originally the students had a choice of a blanket or a letter jacket, but more recently, the seniors receive a watch for their achievement.

Kelly Stretcher of the First National Bank presented watches to Miss Galeano and to Mary Adair.

Lanette Clemens, representing the Gilmer Athletic Boosters, presented Miss Hobbs with her watch.

Megan Bullock received her watch from Larry Cowan of Gilmer National Bank.

Roy Brown of Brown Insurance made the presentation to Ali Fritsche, and Jim Ragland did the honors to Jenny Smith for Firstbank.

Henry Troell of State Farm Insurance presented the gift to Katherine Loftice, while John and Sherry Dugan presented his to Erick Martin.

Upshur County Judge Dean Fowler presented Rachel Lewis her watch, while Bill Patterson did the honors for Hanna Brevard for the second consecutive year.

Colby Henderson received his watch from Betty Orms of the Twentieth Century Club.

Kathy Langford and Maryette Garrett of Dressings jointly made the presentation to Shelbi Daniel.

Paul Herndon donated the watch for Kyle Bowden, and Bill Bradshaw presented a watch to Kiara Jordan which Gloria King donated.

Carolyn Studdard presented the watch which Etex Communications donated to Jarah Crittenden, while Scott Haygood of Firstbank honored Melissa Jackson.

Juniors receiving a blanket in recognition of their scholastic achievement and their donors include:

Shelby Thomas from Mary Jane Barton, Alpha Nu Epsilon; Anna Arrington from Scott Haygood, Austin Bank; Jared Harborth from Roy Brown, Brown Insurance; Clinton Tevebaugh and Adam Martin from Carolyn Studdard, Etex Communications, Aaron Smith from Lisa Smith, Bluebonnet Literary Club; Lulu DeBoer from Terry Dalmore, Firstbank; Larer Clemens from Lanette Clemens, Bluebonnet Literary Club; Samantha Wheeler from Lloyd Dodd, Gilmer Lions Club, Danielle Barr from John and Sherry Dugan; Dustin Varnado from the Travis Hough Memorial as presented by Jeff Traylor; Benjamin Yocum from Larry Cowan, Gilmer National Bank; Hunter Harrison from Gilmer Athletic Boosters represented by Lanette Clemens, Amanda Sherman from Betty Orms, Twentieth Century Club; Kirby Spencer from Pete Herrmann, Economy Auto Parts; Brittany Hicks from Richard Yazell of Yazell Chevrolet-Olds; and Caleb Tillery from Frank Breazeale of UT Ex-Students.

Following a dinner of chicken, rice pilaf and green beans, with rice and dessert served by members of the National Honor Society, the awards were presented to the selected junior and senior class members.
