Group wants Upshur to join NTCC districtBy BRIDGET FOWLER A group of concerned citizens met Tuesday (July 8) at the Gilmer Civic Center to hear Dr. Charles Florio, Dr. Brad Johnson, Dr. Judy Traylor and Dr. McCullough, all of Northeast Texas Community College, speak about expanding the education opportunities available in Upshur County. These include traditional college level, Career Technology, dual credit for high school students, and continuing education. This discussion in regards to having Upshur County join the Northeast Texas Community College district was well attended. Those present were given insight into the opportunities that Upshur County students would have to further their education and careers if NTCC were to be able to provide educational opportunities in Upshur County. Northeast Texas Community College has a purpose to provide higher education programs and support services and assistance in meeting Upshur County’s workforce needs, economic development and employment needs. Meeting these needs would prove invaluable to Upshur County’s economic growth and overall economy, Florio said. The additional tax rate levied for the expansion of NTCC into Upshur County would be 10 cents per $100 of taxable assessed value of property. Using simple math, a homeowner with at $100,000. Valuation on their home would be taxed $92 per year. Upshur County students would be considered “in district” and would not be charged “out of district tuition,” which is what all students experience now if they attend any college in our area. The Upshur Citizens for Northeast Texas Community College will meet again, Wednesday, July 23, at 6:30 p.m. at the Gilmer Civic Center.
